A Sector That’s Evolving

Employment service providers are facing rising expectations. Contracts are becoming more complex, compliance is tighter, and demonstrating real impact is essential. Data sits at the centre of all of this. But collecting data is only part of the story. What matters is how it’s used.

So what does a BI journey look like in practice?

The CVGT Business Intelligence Journey

Prospert worked closely with CVGT in their early BI journey to develop a robust, fit-for-purpose BI Reporting roadmap and design structure. This partnership helped CVGT on their way to build internal capability, improve data integration, and to now use insights to inform both strategy and day-to-day operations.

CVGT’s journey progressed through four phases:

  1. Dipping a toe: The team started with basic Power BI reports for Disability Employment Services (DES), supported by a junior analyst. They adopted a Microsoft-first policy to enable future scalability.

  2. Taking the plunge: With the foundations in place, CVGT expanded its BI footprint. They built API integrations with Employment Services Reporting (ESR) and grew the internal BI team. More staff began using data in decision-making, supported by strategic guidance from Prospert.

  3. All in: In 2024, CVGT migrated to Microsoft Fabric, creating a centralised data platform integrated across core business areas. BI became embedded across the organisation, informing everything from performance reviews to resource planning.

  4. Boundless horizons: By 2025, CVGT was connecting data across HR, finance, CRM systems, and external economic indicators. They began exploring predictive analytics and AI applications to gain deeper foresight and enhance service design.

What They Learnt Along the Way

CVGT’s experience highlights some key success factors:

  • Data quality matters. High-quality, well-structured data is essential to build trust and drive action.

  • Insights drive improvement. Real-time data helps teams test, adjust, and improve faster.

  • Staff buy-in is critical. People need to understand and trust the data they’re being asked to use.

  • It’s not linear. A clear vision helps, but flexibility is needed as new needs emerge.

  • Don’t rely solely on government data. Building internal insights can uncover trends and risks earlier.

It’s Not Just About Tools

One of the most valuable lessons from CVGT’s experience is that Business Intelligence is not just a technical project. It is a people project.

Most employment consultants are recruited for their people skills, rather than their comfort with data. As a result, implementing Business Intelligence effectively requires more than introducing new systems. It involves training, tailored support, and a deliberate shift in culture across the organisation.

By placing people at the centre of the process, CVGT made BI a tool for learning and empowerment, rather than just compliance or reporting.
